The dwindling summer afternoons beckon for long and winding highway drive with the top down. By next summer, or if global warming eliminates winter, we could aerate our scalps in the seat of a BMW 2-Series convertible. The spy shots show a familiar 2-series coupe with the roof missing or covered by a soft-top. Another noticeable difference in these shots is a pair of crude roll bars; which are thankfully unlikely to be in the final model.

This cabriolet is going to be the same driver’s car we know the latest 2-series to be, just without a roof. The base model 228i will carry the 250hp turbo four pot, while the M tuned version will have the 322hp turbo six. These engine options could either be mated to the fun six speed or the smart eight speed transmission options. For now, all power is set to go to the rear, but BMW is expected to add their all-wheel drive option known as ‘xDrive’.

Over the years the smaller BMW’s are often stuck with the stereotype of being the rich kid’s car, that daddy bought them. However, the new 2-series and its variants make a clear stance of being a driver’s car. An approximate price tag around the $35K mark also keeps it at an affordable price. BMW’s next move should be to remake the ‘Epic drift mob’ commercial. This time with the 2-series convertible and all drivers should have comb-overs while drifting the cul-de-sac with the top-down.
