More spy shots out of Germany this week, added to the list is the 2016 BMW 7-Series. Some argue the 7-Series sedan has been the German automaker’s flagship model since its introduction in 1977. BMW is again hoping to surpass expectations with its styling of the next 7-Series. The latest prototype for the code-named G11 model does reveal a slightly sportier front end appearance.

While the design doesn’t stray too far away from the current 7-Series look, underneath BMW has vowed the sheet metal will be updated substantially. BMW’s new modular platform as mentioned from its use in the upcoming 2016 3-Series will also be featured here in the 7-Series. The Modular platform will feature plenty of new technologies such as the use of carbon fibre in some elements thus, saving weight for this luxury sedan.

Weight savings could be around 400 pounds over the current generation 7-Series, which means although it is not all that much on paper; it will provide a substantial performance increase. Addition such as carbon fibre panelling in the roof, hood and trunk as well as the frame will be the major contributing factor in shedding the weight. The sedan’s lighter curb mass should not only improve economy, but also the handling, braking performance and acceleration.

Under the hood, the 7-Series will likely include six, eight, and twelve-cylinder engines, with a turbo charger available for the six-cylinder. While it has been rumoured the V12 will be completely eliminated from production, those who love the V12 sound will likely not be disappointed. With the fuel-saving technology BMW has developed, I am sure they will not ignore the V12. The 2016 7-Series will also see the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model. Also, an M performance model 7-Series (However, you should not call it an M7) will also be available with a brutish twin-turbocharged V8.
